McCloud River Lumber Company:
Wrecks

Things do not always go as planned around any railroad operation. The McCloud on the whole had one of the cleaner safety records in the industry, but that did not mean that the companies did not have their share of wrecks and other mishaps.

All photos from the Jeff Moore collection.

McGiffert Loaders were very top heavy, and it did not take much to tip one over. Here is one seen from a hopefully seldom viewed angle about 1940.

A group of young women gathered around the toppled McGiffert for photos.

A diesel tractor and arch and Crane 8 have arrived to right the machine.

The McGiffert is almost back on its feet.

The work in progress from a different angle.

One last shot as the recovery work nears completion. The loader is almost ready for a trip to the shops in Pondosa or McCloud for repairs.

Another toppled McGiffert in the mountains just southwest of Lookout Junction. This would have been a more serious recovery job than the one pictured above.

Two photos of a wrecked log train. Crane 16 is on hand to help with the clean up.
