The McCloud River management made an exception to whatever prohibitions it had in place against any more geared steam locomotives stemming from the disastrous experience with the Heislers when it got into the Black Fox Mountain country. Unlike the #2, however, the three truck Shay by 1911 was a very well proven design, and the two Shays served McCloud well for thirteen years before their slow speed and newer power coming on line prompted McCloud to sell them.
